Measurements

My friend John sent me a link to this article in Stereophile. I know it is pretty old, but I still found it fascinating. There has always been a debate about tubes vs solid state amplification, and this article offers some empirical evidence as to what we subjectively hear when we listen to tube amps and solid state amps. The evidence to me seems pretty convincing, but the article also has responses from readers both supporting and refuting the original article. It becomes a conversation on the issue with what I think is some great evidence as to the why of the tube/transistor debate. Check it out.

Mountaineering

The Rocky Mountain Audio Fest was held at the end of October in Denver, and I was unfortunately unable to go. However, I have found some interesting coverage of the event presented in what I think is a pretty cool fashion. Stephæn Harrel, on assignment from Audio Asylum and published on 6moons.com went around to as many dealers as he could find and asked them one simple question. "What is a favorite recording that you listen to, not to wow others, but when no one else is around?" He got what I thought were some cool answers. He also posted a picture of each respondant with their gear. I thought this was a neat way to get a bit more personal with the people that make up the hi-fi world.

The article comes with a bonus interview with a 14 year old audiophile from Minnesota who is working on restoring his own turntable. Some really good stuff. Check it out!

A Fine Line

I have mentioned the Gallo Acoustics Reference 3.1 speakers frequently before on this blog, as they are a speaker that I have spent a lot of time with. Well, it appears that Anthony Gallo is about to release a new high-end speaker design on the world that is an improvement: the Gallo Reference 5LS. This is a line array consisting of 7 of Gallo's ribbon tweeters, 8 of his midrange drivers, and 12 4" woofers for the low end. There is a preview of this speaker up at 6moons.com and I highly suggest you check it out!
