Tangled Up In Blue

I believe I have mentioned recently that I am looking into integrated amplifiers to drive my Rainmakers, and I believe I have stumbled upon something pretty darn cool. The CS by Blue Circle Audio.

I do not know what it is about our neighbor to the north, but Canada seems to produce some of the most intriguing companies. Blue Circle, like Totem, seems to be a small quirky company interested in creating the best musical experience possible, while being less concerned with stats. Not to say that the numbers do not look good, but it does not seem to be their primary concern.

The CS, like all Blue Circle electronics, is a hand wired integrated that has some cool design aspects. It is single ended, producing 50wpc into 8ohm, 75wpc into 4ohm. Perfect for what I need. It also has separate power supplies for the amp/preamp sections. I could write more, but much has already been written here, here, and here. Check it out if you are interested.

Now, I do have some concerns about the CS. For one, the nearest dealer is a few states away in Illinois, so I am not sure I will be able to audition one. Another is about quality control. These are each and wired in Canada (all by the designer Gilbert maybe?) Do they all sound the same? With the price I would guess they have to. In some ways it adds to their charm.

I recommend visiting the Blue Circle web site and checking out their other products. From their high end monoblocks to their affordable powerbars with built in filters I think it is clear that every item is designed and built with a serious amount of thought and passion.

Oh, and I apologize for the title, but I am listening to Blood on the Tracks and it was Dylan's birthday a few days ago, so I could not help it.

Hi-Fi Pod

So multiple people have sent this article to me, so I feel a bit behind the curve on this one, but since I posted earlier on the iPod/hi-fi issue I wanted to mention it. It is basically how iPods are starting to be integrated into hi-fi systems, and talks a bit about how people are having their iPods modified to include some more audiophile-quality components. I found it an interesting read.
